Fast-charging technology continues to develop. The USB Power Delivery 3.1 specification introduced by USB-IF raises the maximum charging power from 100W under PD 3.0 to 240W, taking USB PD fast charging beyond the 100W range.
Extended Power Range
PD 3.1 adds Extended Power Range (EPR) alongside the existing Standard Power Range (SPR). SPR retains the 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V voltage levels for power up to 100W. EPR adds fixed 28V, 36V and 48V levels, enabling power delivery of up to 240W through USB-C with compatible equipment.
What This Enables
Some high-performance gaming laptops and mobile workstations require more power than earlier PD chargers can provide. A compliant 240W PD 3.1 charger could support a wider range of these power-hungry devices. In the future, selected household appliances and power tools may also use USB-C and PD 3.1, bringing more equipment closer to a common power connection.
Cable Requirements
Reaching 240W requires an EPR-rated USB-C to USB-C cable. Ordinary cables are not intended for the higher voltage and should not be substituted. The charger, cable and connected device must all support the required charging mode.
Looking Ahead
Apple’s 140W charging adapter was among the early products to adopt PD 3.1. As the technology matures and costs fall, more brands are expected to introduce compatible high-power chargers and cables. The original company article states that Shenzhen HNT Electronics is investing research resources in next-generation PD 3.1 power products and 240W charging solutions.
PD 3.1 represents more than a higher power ceiling: it supports the continued development of USB-C as a common power interface for a broader range of electronic devices.
