Gallium nitride, or GaN, has become a familiar term in the PD charger market. The material changes how power components switch and helps designers balance output, efficiency and size.
Smaller power stages
GaN devices can switch at high frequency, allowing the magnetic components and related power circuitry to become more compact. That makes it easier to build a small charger without giving up useful output.
Less conversion loss
Lower switching loss means more input energy is delivered to the device instead of becoming heat. Thermal performance still depends on the complete electrical and mechanical design, but GaN gives engineers more room to optimize.
Ready for higher-power protocols
As PD standards move beyond 100W, GaN provides a practical foundation for compact products. HNT’s GaN PD range demonstrates how a 65W output can fit into a relatively small housing.
