Phone chargers are easy to overlook, yet overheating can shorten service life, create safety concerns and affect the device being charged.
Common causes
Non-genuine adapters may omit important protection. Excess voltage or current, direct sunlight, nearby heat sources, poor ventilation and extended connection after a battery is full can all increase temperature.
Practical prevention
Use a charger that matches the device, keep it in a cool and ventilated place, unplug it after charging when practical, and replace worn cables or cracked housings immediately.
USB and lithium-battery chargers
General USB chargers commonly cover 5V to 20V and support a wide device range. Dedicated lithium-battery chargers use narrower voltage and current ranges with protections designed for a specific pack. Always match the charger to the battery specification.
Over-charge and over-voltage protection are important safeguards against thermal events. Replace a charger when it shows physical damage, unusual heat or a noticeable drop in charging performance.
